Sony itself describes The Last of Us as "a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague." Unfortunately, even from the footage we've seen (which was captured entirely on a PlayStation 3), we still don't know precisely how the game will play. But the game undeniably looks like Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (and likely runs on an identical engine), s***esting that it will be a third-person title much in the same vein as the trilogy Naughty Dog is best known for. Will it support co-op or is the single-player experience the thrust of what The Last of Us is going for? We simply don't know yet.
The trailer begins with a shot of what's actually the very first screenshot we ever saw of the game. Foliage and a serene blue sky are accompanied by a soundless enviroment, marred only by the blowing wind. As the camera pans back from that shot, however, you realize just how dire the situation is in The Last of Us. An apartment building's interior is shown. Disheveled surroundings s***est that the events that led to this post-apocalyptic world didn't happen yesterday.
Tattered wallpaper, a broken mirror, blood spattered across the wall… all of it is covered over with dust and dirt. Blood stains on the wall remind you of how violent a world like this can become. A freshly-slain body drips blood into a considerable pool on the carpeted floor as one of the game's two protagonists runs through the scene. This girl is Ellie, described by Sony as "a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years."
Upon hearing a commotion upstairs, Ellie runs up some nearby steps and slowly approaches an open doorway. She almost casually pulls a blade from her back pocket, and it's clear she knows how to use it. On the other side of the door, a middle-aged man is in heated battle with another human survivor. His name is Joel, described by Sony only as "a ruthless survivor."
Sony clearly wasn't kidding. Although we know the game is about the survivors of a devastating epidemic, as well as those that are turned into ravenous monsters by said epidemic, this scene in particular startled me. Joel isn't fighting a creature. He's killing another man, bludgeoning him to death before ordering Ellie to search his body for supplies. Ellie gleefully finds some bullets on him as she picks through a bag on his body, exclaiming "bingo!" as she claims what she's looking for. According to Sony, "abandoned cities are being reclaimed by nature and the remaining survivors are killing each other for food, weapons and whatever they can get their hands on." This is second nature for Ellie and Joel. They have to do this to remain alive and uninfected.
