Default How do I improve my penmanship?

Comparing my handwriting to the work of a normal person who thinks his penmanship is mediocre, is like comparing the half-attractive girls on this website who think they're 'ugly' to the infamous Phantom of the Opera. Really; my penmanship is almost that bad. My handwriting is abominable.

How come mentally ill people like me generally have such poor handwriting? What I've noticed is that most people have been to taught to write in the same way I have, but still have average handwriting that's reasonably uniform and neat.

Many people are unable to read my writing. I don't know if they're just being mean, or if they genuinely can't make out what I've written. I just can't write normally, and I can't put my finger on the reason why.

If it's noteworthy, I'm also left-handed. What little penmanship I have is even worse if I attempt to write with my right hand.

Any advice? I know I should write in a tripod grip and move the pen across the paper by moving my shoulder, but that hasn't helped me much.

There's probably nothing wrong with your handwritting. I have stuff that effect how I learn but my handwritting is that bad.
It's probably better than you think, like mine.

    Don't worry about it, dude.

Well, I'm right handed and used to have really really bad handwriting.
You could always practice with a calligraphy set. That's what I did. It's harder to write with and then once you actually master writing with the tool, it's easier to write with pencil/pen. =]

My handwriting is atrocious - I've had 100's reduced to 80's for being illegible. Learn from your mistakes man - use computers.
For a German it is even good to have somewhat lengthy words in his mouth, for he thinks slowly, and they give him time to reflect.

There are different ways to hold a pencil, try figuring which works best for you. An elder once taught me that I'm supposed to use my pointer and thumb, while the pencil rests on the middle finger. I could never really do it that way though, I rest it in between the middle and ring finger.

Only recently have I discovered how lovely a fountain pen is and also writing in pencil. Both instruments actually improve our handwriting. Pencil usually being the first. However, it's going to take a lot of practice to improve your handwriting, but with time you should be able to notice a difference to your particular handwriting style. I write in script-stylie, having seen an example that I really loved and began practising it first in pencil on decent paper. Later I graduated to a nice fountain pen after feeling my confidence grow.

Fountain pens are available in left-handed or right-handed nibs. Try out a pen in a stationer's shop and see how you get on. Tell the store manager you need to discover your preference; I'm sure they'll be cool with it.
