Ok so here's the deal I have a speech on Wednesday (May 9th, 2012). So it's on depression. Persuasive speech.. what my group and I are trying to do is persuade people to use natural ways (exercising, eating better etc) to cure peoples' depression without using an anti-depressant.
I'm doing the introduction... it's a group speech.
So for my attention getter I am doing suicide statistics (because sometimes depression leads into suicide)
But anyways, I wanted to come up with a story kind of... something really awesome to put before I start saying my statistics.
So far I have: Last year alone one million people committed suicide. That means this year approximately one million people will die in the US by suicide. According to some website (not going to name it here), every 40 seconds someone dies by suicide because of depression.
You know, it's an okay attention getter, but i want some amazing suicide story to make it even better, so I can end my attention getter with that, if you understand what I mean.
Any advice will be appreciated, or you can lead me in the right direction with something. Thanks in advance.

I think anyone that's been where you are can appreciate your apprehension. This is just a step and after you've taken it, you'll realize that it's a well-marked, well-worn path....it will be over and done before you know it. Rest easy.

for future reference, when looking at a topic, like depression, it may make more of an impact if you state how widespread the damage can be. one million people die, but how many relatives are impacted? if you were to say four relatives and project it over the course of a decade then you're looking at 40 million people whose lives will never be the same because of these individuals choices. fewer people died in the nazi death camps than people this decade due to suicide.

does that make it worse than the holocaust? no, but it's not about comparison more than perspective. a biased perspective to catch peoples attention. no amazing stories required, just a one line bombshell for the audience to think about.

'Some website'? Please try to be more specific about your sources. I just hate it when people do that. If your numbers are from the WHO, then SAY they're from the WHO!
