The longest you're legally allowed to stay just visitting is 6 months. And take it from someone with experience in the matter, if customs, at any point, feels like you're gonna over-stay your welcome, and don't have enough ties drawing you back to your own home, they're just gonna straight up tell you no, and you won't even get into the country. If you try to come in without a return ticket, or if they feel your trip is too long to where you can't support yourself, they'll also just say no.
I dealt with American customs. Maybe they're more ****ish than the Canadian customs, but that's how I was treated.
Edit: Just read that you're planning on doing it after a second year of college so you're probably planning on going the student visa route so disregard most of this.
