Default Carrie Underwood risks backlash after speaking out on gay rights

Religious country star and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood has spoken out in favor of marriage equality

By Joe Morgan from Gay Star News

While Carrie Underwood may be the musical darling of religious Conservatives in the US, she has risked a backlash by speaking out on gay rights.

In a profile interview with British newspaper The Independent, the country singer said she believes, as a Christian, everyone has the right to ‘love publicly’.

‘As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry,’ she said. ‘I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.’

Although Underwood was raised as a Baptist in Oklahoma, which tends to oppose marriage equality, she now worships in a non-denominational church.

She said: ‘Our church is gay friendly. Above all, God wanted us to love others. It’s not about setting rules, or saying ‘everyone has to be like me’. No. We’re all different. That what makes us special.

‘We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody. ‘

Underwood’s number one single ‘Jesus Take The Wheel’ gave the country singer a large fan base of evangelical Christians, a large majority being homophobic.

In the interview, she slammed ‘people who use the Bible for hate’. She added: ‘That’s not how I want myself as a Christian to be represented.

Since winning American Idol in 2005, Underwood has gone onto smash hit success. She recently kicked Adele’s 21 from the top spot of the US chart with her new album Blown Away.

Talk about standing up for what you believe in regardless what your 'fans' say.
