RUMOUR: More PS3 Downgrades On The Way?
He calls himself “Phantom Insider” and he claims that more PS3 spec downgrades are coming. Truth or falsehood? Hit the link to read what he has to say.
The person who goes by the moniker “Phantom Insider” has told Kotaku.com that the Playstation 3 technical specifications Sony revealed in May at E3 2006 are to be further downgraded. Apparently this person in the know has been privy to inside information on the PS3 in the past and also shared it with Kotaku at that time. This time the Phantom Insider claims Sony is considering making the PS3’s power box external rather than internal as previously stated and he also continues on to indicate that the console’s clock speed will be lowered from 3.5 ghz to 2.8 ghz. All this in an apparent text based internet conversation (dubious) with the gaming website:
Red Says: got any interesting news?Phantom Insider says: sureRed says: then let’s start it upPhantom Insider says: Fully functional PS3 betas still do not existRed says: hmmPhantom Insider says: Despite that we have seen a number of downgradesRed says: clock speed?Red says: remember it was going to be 3.5 ghz?Phantom Insider says: And now we have been told that the power source might be an external 400 watt unit after allPhantom Insider says: instead of internal as promisedRed says: interestingPhantom Insider says: The current designs despite having vents all over the place apparently still can’t dissipate the heat to sufficient levelsPhantom Insider says: And yields on 3.2 Gigaherz CELL processors are too lowRed says: they can’t produce them in mass supply still?Phantom Insider says: so the final release might run only at 2.8 gigaherzRed says: what have you heard about the rsx?Red says: why would that be downgraded?Red says: it as already somewhat weakPhantom Insider says: RSX is finished and has been finished for quite a few months nowRed says: hmmPhantom Insider says: we know what it can and cannot doRed says: yea?Phantom Insider says: I won’t comment any furtherRed says: hint?Phantom Insider says: NoRed says: come on, this is anonymousPhantom Insider says: I can’t tell you morePhantom Insider says: I do not want to lose my jobRed says: does it bode well for the ps3?Phantom Insider says: Last time we had a lot of internal emails coming in from SonyRed says: hmm not surprisedRed says: you were the first to blow the lid off thingsPhantom Insider says: They were looking for the sources of the delay and dev problems leaksRed says: lolPhantom Insider says: i cannot risk itPhantom Insider says: I am sorryRed says: no probsRed says: one thingRed says: were the units at e3 2.8?Phantom Insider says: yesPhantom Insider says: and had 2 gigs of ramPhantom Insider says: dev kits ya know
Ever since Sony unveiled the latest and apparently final revision of the console at E3 this year, there has been much speculation as to whether there will be more changes to the unit. Sony altered some aspects of the PS3 from the original E3 2005 version, those being support for 4 controllers now as opposed to 7 before, one ethernet port and not 3 as originally stated in 2005, lack of HDMI output on the 20GB “Basic” version and only 1 HDMI slot on the premium version (2 were stated at E3 2005), 4 USB 2.0 slots as compared to 6 in 2005 and no built in WiFi support (basic version).
Keep in mind that if Phantom Insider’s claims are true, and we seriously think that is doubtful, then the results of the clock speed downgrade will not be apparent for some time as current first generation PS3 games do not even begin to test the machine and determine what it is capable of. Maybe it would have an effect in second or third generation games. Maybe.
He does have one thing going for him though, he is very literate which is more than we can say for most self-proclaimed “insiders”.
Please take this information with two aircraft carrier’s holds worth of salt.
Thanks for the tip Cesar!
