Peter Wildeblood was the first person in the UK, to openly declare himself gay.

This followed a court case, whence he and others were prosecuted on the suspicion that they had indulged in gay activeties.

It all seems unbelievable now, but at that time the Police, and the British establishment went all out to persecute gay people, no cars about at that time.

This month it is forty years since the law in the UK was changed to allow gay relationships, however It was only in 1998 that the UK Parliament passed a law giving gays parity with the hetrosexual age of consent 16 YRO.

Wolfenden Committee

Wildeblood's determination to raise awareness of the plight of homosexuals resulted in him writing a groundbreaking book, Against the Law. But in 1955 he gave what was, for him, his most important contribution to the debate about homosexuality. His appearance before the Wolfenden Committee defended the rights of homosexuals to a selection of public figures, most of whom knew nothing about the subject. In a pivotal moment in gay history, Wildeblood advocated changes which, although conservative by today's standards, were revolutionary for the time.

Andy, in the whole History of the UK, the First Gay Person appeared in 1923?

That sounds fishy to me.

There had to be others Openly Gay before this....
