iPhone Users Notice a Big Difference in Touchscreens

Thu Aug 2, 2007 3:53AM EDT
See Comments If you've been toying with the idea of buying an iPhone, here's something you want to read. Computerworld recently came across complaints that some iPhone touchscreens are better than others. Several iPhone users have posted images of side-by-side phone comparisons that show screens on iPhones with Panel ID 7 are darker, fuzzier, and display a visible grid of dots across the screen. Those who have noticed a significant difference in their iPhone's screen quality have taken their complaints to Apple's support forums, and some even went as far as exchanging their iPhone.
One way to find your iPhone's screen information is by tapping in *3001#12345#* on the phone keypad and hitting the Call button, which puts it into Field Test Mode where you'll find the "LCD panel ID" number. Phones with a panel IDs that start with 7 are the ones people are complaining about, while the those that begin with a 5 are brighter, sharper, and don't show a grid pattern. Computerworld says users have several theories about the faulty touchscreens, such as registration problems between the touchscreen and overlay to differences between screen suppliers. Toshiba, Sharp, Epson, and Matsu****a Display Technology all supply Apple with screens for the iPhone, according to reports, so who knows which company is supplying the dimmer screen.
I, for one, know that if I paid over $600 to be the first with an iPhone, I'd want complete satisfaction, and that would include a touchscreen that's sharper and brighter. How about you? Has anyone else noticed this problem?

Pfft. Touch Screens are a bloody nuisance. I have a touchscreen on my current phone and it keeps doing things that I don't want it to because I accidently touch the wrong button.

I really feel like smashing it against the wall sometimes.

What's the general "the big deal" about 'em?

iPhones do suck. I would hate to have a touch screen for a phone. A phone is used for calling people! I guess some people forgot what a cell phone is really meant to be used for. I saw on the news the other day that these phones that people just bought will be outdated within 1-2 years, because Apple is already making design changes to the iPhone. So people with their fancy iPhones will have to replace them if they love having the best of the best.

Not all apple products suck. I don't care for apple computers, but the iPod is pretty good. The only thing I found lame about the iPod is when the battery gets old and doesn't keep its charge for long, you have to send it in to Apple for them to replace it. You can't just go out and buy a new battery and replace it yourself which I think was pretty stupid on apple's part.

btw about the dirty fingers part, you should stop masturbating so much =P

My boss has an iPhone.
I hate it.
So does she.

Like a computer, it eventually heats up. That's annoying.

It's a weird shape to hold on to.

If you want to try to text or type in a number while driving, it's a huge hazard. You can't feel any buttons, so you have to look at it.

Typing is a bitch. I'm a big texter, and after trying it, I wanted to break it. You have to type with your pointer finger(s) because most thumbs are too big. It's pretty hard to type like that when you want speed.

It's ugly. I thought the back would be like an iPod, all nice and shiney. Yea, no. It's like ugly grey plastic and only the apple is metal. Boo.

not to mention, as i pointed out in another thread, it was already invented over a year ago except the other phone has a full keyboard instead of a retarded touch screen
