People who stereotype usually learn their beliefs from personal experience or indirect means like peers, parents, media etc. Though mainly they stereotype because they have had a lack of personal experience to LGBT's.
Take it like this. Homosexual men are stereotyped to be effeminate because of media, such as Theatre and Broadway musicals aka a Queen. This makes some public believe all gay men are involved in performing arts etc. Television shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy promotes that most gay men are extremely into fashion and cosmetics etc. It makes people think that gay men enjoy shopping etc etc.
With females, the public usually stereotypes them as butch, construction working women who are rough and tough. Also, feminists are portrayed as lesbians due to their perceived misandry. Some lesbians are also shown to be "man-haters" which gives an easy door way to stereotyping.
With bisexuals, they're usually stereotyped as promiscuous and deceitful or it can be seen as a temporary condition whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They could be seen as homosexuals who are in denial about their sexual orientation. Then again, there's the stereotype that EVERYONE is bisexual!
Transgendered stereotyping usually is shown as butch women, feminine men, drag queens, drag kings, cross-dressers etc. Some people believe that all transgendered people are pros.titues and caricatures of men or women. Then there are transvestites who are stereotyped to be homosexual however some are hetrosexual!
