Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay, Harry Potter author JK Rowling has revealed.

Rowling outed Dumbledore, a central character in the books, while speaking to an audience of fans in New York.

The revelation was greeted with gasps, then applause.

"I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy," the author quipped.

Gay human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said: "It's good that children's literature includes the reality of gay people, since we exist in every society.
"But I am disappointed that she did not make Dumbledore's sexuality explicit in the Harry Potter book. Making it obvious would have sent a much more powerful message of understanding and acceptance."

Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore, played by Sir Michael Gambon in the films.

A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character.

She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards.

"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down".
Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy".

Deathly Hallows broke sales records as the fastest-selling book ever, selling more than 11 million copies in the first 24 hours following its release.

The fifth film adaptation of the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was released this summer. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is due for release late next year.

I'm replying to this because I'm a hard core Harry Potter fan.

I believe that if it was not mentioned in the books, which it was not, what JKR says about the characters should not matter. She had her chances to get that information in there, and now the opportunity is over. So in my mind, Dumbledore will not be gay.

Also, I think having him as all people would send out a bad image.
Everyone in the books always said that Dumbledore favored Harry too much, so everyone who read the books will know of Dumbledore playing favorites with Harry.
What do most people think of an old gay man playing favorites to one of his boy students?

why on earth would she bother to give anyone a specific sexuality? theres no mention of sex in any of the books, nor should there be, its a childrens book ffs.

and dumbledore will never be gay to me i always imagined him sort of like a gandalf-ish person.

now this is just another reason some parents wont let their child read the book, which is a pity because theyre so amazing, she should have left well enough alone.

I read it too. As far as I'm concerned they are her characters so she can say whatever she wants about them. But I read that she even said that by her outing Dumbledore that a lot more controversy is going to come out of it just when we thought it was over. And I agree that it was better that she outed him outside of the books.

Considering there was 0 evidence at all in the books for it, I doubt he was ever gay until this point. I don't think hardly any will accept him as being gay, it'd just be stupid at this point.

it seems irrelivent to me
i love the hatty potter books and all their characters!
it makes no difference to me, i just think if that was
his life (being a gay man) they should have maybe
made it clearer.plus i dont think all gay men are on the hunt for young boys,those people are called pedos
gay people work in all fields of work
i highly doubt that they are doing anything except trying to make a difference in a young persons life.

my therapist is gay and i never met a more careing
guy,he really was amazing,i almost died when i lost him
he had class and such understanding that many of the straight therapists did not have
you cant juge a person on their sexual bent
that is but one aspect of a person.
maybe thats why dumble dore was so careing and loveing, with a higher level of understanding
