Default the representation of gay/ lesbian tv characters.

This is a question for my A2 media coursework please help by giving your oppinion.

Do you think gay and lesbian characters in TV dramas + soaps have an influence on whether gay/lesbian people are accepted in today's society?

No.
Because the characters based on a TV show are fiction.

Why would any real gay person base acceptance on someone who is a fictional character, made for entertainment on television?

Also, whether they're accepted on the show is just a storyline.. which provides on what some people's take on homosexuality is like.
Bear in mind, most have moved on from the decade which spawned it inferior, minus the one or two who are just ignorant.

I don't know how sitcoms etc work in other countries, but in the US the answer is sadly, yes.

I'd say gays are comparable to Orientals on TV: They're only there for humor.

Gay people recognize that most gays aren't really like their TV counterparts of course, but for many straight people, the gay characters they see on television only serve to reinforce existing stereotypes: limp-wristed, fashion-oriented, girly, obsessed with their looks ... pretty much every gay stereotype is reinforced by these shows.

Even the certain amount of "wisdom" that gay characters bring (as a result of having a "unique" perspective on life I guess) is either delivered as a punchline, or in the guise of self-deprecating humor.

As a result, gays--like the Orientals I mentioned--are often seen as characters, rather than real people with real problems and real feelings.

Show me a "tough" gay guy portrayed in the media, and I'll show you a good start in the right direction.

i think shows like queer as folk do a pretty decent job of portraying different types of homosexuals, but shows like will and grace and queer eye piss me off cause they make it seem like were all obsessed with shopping at barneys ny and buying sweater vests and crap.

Yes I do
My husband is a complete homophobe (tis ok for a woman to be bi but not gay and..never ok for men to be with men type of person)
sorry Im being a little blunt but im being truthful
honestly he drive me nuts on how anti gay he is
anywaaaaaaaaays
I love the show will and grace
^^^^
and so does he.
The show as well as a few others made him see that being gay isnt just about s3x (the way most misinformed people think)
he'll never think its right.. and I'll always think hes ignorant but he does see a different side
that it does have to do with love and hes even said he always thought people chose to be gay.. but seeing some shows on tv.. movies etc he thinks differently now.
*enough rambling my cookies are burning *

^^^^^^ Thats a good post, about things as they stand.

Gays could also, be more pro-active within their communities.

Some of the Gay Pride marches and the stereo types portrayed within, by gay peeps make me want to vomit at times.

Most Gays live a conservative life style.

Every community has its extremes..

PN: Good luck with your project... (REPS)
