Cooking Shows
Have you guys ever tried recipes from a cooking show?
While I was getting my nails done, we watched this girl make some pretty delicious looking pound cake. It's in the oven now as we speak (but without the orange), and the buzzer should go off any minute.
If you've used a recipe from a cooking show, let us know the show, recipe, and how it turned out! (don't just mindlessly post recipes, gotta have some feedback)

POUND CAAKE
1 1/2 cups cake flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter, room temperature, plus more to grease the baking pan
1 1/2 cups whole milk ricotta cheese
1 1/2 cups sugar, plus 1 tablespoon
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 orange, zested
2 tablespoons Amaretto
Powdered sugar, for dusting
1 pint strawberries, hulled and quartered or 3 oranges, cut into supremes
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9 by 5 by 3-inch loaf pan with butter. In a medium bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir to combine.
Using an electric mixer, cream together the butter, ricotta, and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. With the machine running, add the eggs 1 at a time. Add the vanilla, orange zest, and Amaretto until combined. Add the dry ingredients, a small amount at a time, until just incorporated. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and bake until a toothpick comes out clean and the cake is beginning to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 45 to 50 minutes. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Using a mesh sieve, dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar.
Meanwhile, place the strawberries (or orange supremes) in a small bowl with the remaining 1 tablespoon sugar. Let sit until the juices have pooled around the strawberries.
To serve, slice the cake and serve with a spoonful of strawberries and their juices over the top of the cake.
so it turned out AMAZING
i didn't do the orange or the strawberries, 'cause i was lazy
it was incredibly moist and like the best dough ever (that amaretto is delicious)
i think it could have been cooked a bit longer on a lower heat though
and mine ended up deflating a bit (but it still was great)
it's on the sweeter side of pound cakes (instead of buttery), but still wonderful
i'd definately make it again
oh, and no powdered sugar on top
that's waay too sweet

This past christmas I happened to be watching food network looking for new ideas on homemade gift baskets
I absolutely adore Sandra lee semi home made.
She made Boston cream cupcakes
so simple really I was surprised
1 box of yellow cake mix
1 jar of betty crocker chocolate frosting
1 box of vanilla pudding
Follow the directions on the box for cupcakes
once they've cooled cut a little hole in the top of the cupcake.. remove the piece but DO NOT THROW IT AWAY you'll need it later to keep the pudding inside the cupcake.
Fill a plastic ziploc bag with the pudding
snip just a little corner of the bag enough that you can pipe the pudding into the center of the cupcake
replace the cupcake top
and frost.
how simple is.
and man are they good.

Christmas Morning Cinnamon Buns Recipe courtesy Brother Rick Curry, The Secrets of Jesuit Breadmaking, HaperPerennial, 1995
Show: Sara's Secrets
Episode: Quick and Easy Breads
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
2 cups milk, scalded
2 large eggs, beaten
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup mashed potatoes, unsalted
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1/2 cup lukewarm water
7 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Dissolve the vegetable shortening in the milk in a bowl and cool to lukewarm. Stir in the eggs, 1 cup sugar, potatoes, and salt. Dissolve the yeast in lukewarm water and stir onto the potato mixture. Stir in the flour, raisins, and nuts. Mix thoroughly for 5 minutes by hand. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 hour.
Turn out onto lightly floured surface. Roll into a 1/2-inch thick rectangle and spread with the butter. Sprinkle with the 1 remaining tablespoon sugar and the cinnamon. Roll like a jelly roll and slice 12 equal slices. Place slices flat in 12 by 8-inch baking dish. Cover with a tea towel and let rise until double in bulk, about 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
a) this recipe didn't come with a glaze, which surprised me, because YOU CAN'T HAVE CINNAMON BUNS WITHOUT ICING
b) i dunno what was up with the yeast. it asked for 2 tablespoons, but that made it more than triple in size, which wasn't supposed to happen
c) MORE BUTTER
d) bad cinnamon to sugar ratio. you need 2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon to each tablespoon of sugar, and at least 4 total tablespoons of sugar (so 10 teaspoons of cinnamon)
i stole this recipe for icing:
Bun Finish:
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk
it wasn't very good either
i used 1/4 cup of sugar and 3 or 4 cups of powdered sugar instead
