Issue that causes gay and lesbians to become emotionally ill

I was reading a book today and it says that the main factor behind gay and lesbians who develop an emotional illness is not orientation itself but from society's reactions to sexual orientation. Let us know if you agree or desagree with that statement.

Anyone be they gay, lesbian or straight can be emotionally ill due to how society perceives them. Or do gays have the monopoly on emotional illness?

And what book was this btw?

Isn't it obvious? I don't see how being gay would cause depression by itself, although some religious fanatics (James Dobson in particular) would like people to believe that.

I believe that. Society treats gays and lesbians horrible. Maybe I should say it might depend on where you live too, some places are more excepting then others, but I think for the most part the majority have problems with gays and lesbians and bisexuals.

i was looking up my towns statistics the other day and they estimated about 0.2% of the population was gay/lesbian.

and i have never been met with any hostility in this town.

i think its more about how you present yourself, because even most homophobic people admit its not the fact that people are gay, its how they force their lifestyle out on people.

Society treats fat people horribly. And heaven forbid if you're born extremely ugly. So again why would gays be more emotionally affected?

And it's not only Dr. Phil, Oprah, Montel etc we should thank for contributing to the myth that everyone is an emotional/mental cripple. A standing ovation should be given to C-A, because I've never come across so many wingnuts in all my born days.

Nobody said gays are "more" emotionally affected. The question is whether some gay people become depressed because of how they're treated in society or if it's just a natural part of being gay.

It's like asking if fat people are depressed because depression is a natural part of being overweight, or if they're depressed because they're made to feel bad about it by others.
