Default Home-made 'bomb' youths detained

Two teenagers have been sentenced to 14 months detention after they admitted lighting a home-made bomb and leaving it on a footpath in the Borders.
Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told the pair were "bored and drunk" and had hoped to "make a big bang".
Gary Stewart, 17, and Paul Ndoro, 18, of Selkirk, had previously admitted the offence in the town last December.
Sheriff Derrick McIntyre said it was a dangerous act and only ineptitude had meant the device had failed to explode.
At an earlier hearing, the court had been told how a smoking object had been spotted by a man out walking his dog on Riverside Road in Selkirk.

It was an incredibly stupid thing to do and neither appeared to have thought it through

The fire service later described it as "an improvised explosive device".
It consisted of a gas canister, an aerosol and a glass jar containing tissues, nails, screws and five disposable cigarette lighters which had all been bound together with electric tape.
Greig McDonnell, representing Stewart, said the teenagers had been drinking for most of the day prior to committing the offence.
"He was not trying to make a bomb for a terrorist attack or something like that," he explained.
He said the two youths wanted to "see if they could make a big bang".
Serious injury
Matthew Patrick, representing Ndoro, said there had been some thought given to where to put the device.
"It was not placed on a busy street," he said.
"There was not a complete disregard for the safety of individuals."
A social work report described it as a "misguided prank".
Mr Patrick added: "It was an incredibly stupid thing to do and neither appeared to have thought it through."
However, Sheriff McIntyre said the device could have caused serious injury if it had exploded.
He also pointed out that both teenagers, now prisoners at Saughton, had been on bail at the time of the offence.
He sentenced both of them to detention and backdated the term to 19 December when they were first remanded in custody.
