The issues I foresee is that if you allow them to be openly so in the military, is that it could make others in their company or people they bunk with fairly uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable with people that you are surrounded by and work with could undermine comradery which is a key element in the military. Another issue that could arise is that people could frivolously sue for being hazed over homosexuality when it's common practice to be hazed in the military already and might have nothing to do with their sexual preference. Not to mention that the valid argument that someone could be hazed simply because and would be hard pressed to prove it was not the typical hazing.
Honestly I feel they should not be punished for being homosexual but am confused at why they would want to publicly make it known when they know it will only cause an unnecessary awkwardness that could simply be avoided by not even mentioning it.

I think this Contibutor makes a lot of sense with the above quoted message!
I personally know that if I "COME OUT!" I will loose a lot of Friends especially living in a small homophobic country town like I do.
I think it is one's "Personal Choice," whether to reveal your homosexuality to others but speaking from my own experience, I feel its better to remain "In the closet!" Rather than reveal your personal preferences or feelings so as to keep the peace so to speak!
Its all a matter of Freedom Of choice as the quoted contributor says in the last sentence! GOOD LUCK, and so many heartfelt and very sincere, "THANK YOUS!" to all those serving in our Forces for giving us the freedom of choice we can do right now!
