OK I'm going to purely throw this out there to get some debating going..
Engineer: A person, who researchs, develops and implements. An inventor or innovator.
I'm going to say at least that engineers are the ones to
contribute most to
modern society, i.e. the technilogical revolution we are in.
That is, without the innovation of engineers we wouldn't be where we are today. Every branch of profession has improved or been made easier due to engineers, which inturn has had an exponential effect on society. For example, Surgeons jobs have been made alot easier with the addition of robotics to make high risk procedures that require precision and accuracy far more likely to be successful. In terms of anti-biotics etc, bio-med engineers in collaberation with electical/optical/mechanical etc have produced more effective means of research which inturn leads to more vaccines etc.
Then of course there is the means of travel we have developed through aviation, automotive development. It is now possible for families to unite on the opposite side of the world in 2 days max, as opposed to trips that would have taken months before via ship (although engineers developed boats too. So really they developed the ability to cross vast amounts of water lol).
Then there is construction. The home you live in, the bridges you cross to get to school, the school you work in etc etc were all researched and designed by civil engineers.
This is only a miniscule fraction of what they have done. There is literally nothing in modern society that hasn't been directly improved/created or affected by engineers, whether it be good or bad bad for mankind. Bar maybe, untouched land/wildlife.
Now before ppl say that teachers taught the engineers what they know..... the fact is, things that are taught are known and thus taught due to innovation or break through developments. It's not as if one day Zworykin was born with the knowledge that if by shooting electrons at a phospherous screen we will be able to develop coloured patterns that will inturn allow us to develop images on a screen.
So in summary, I believe that engineers (remember it's a broad field) have had the
greatest impact on modern society. So i beg the question, is there anything you use in a day that an engineer hasn't had a hand in developing? Which also leads to the question, does that make them the most important professionals?
