For some reason, It really grinds my nerves when someone uses either sexual preference or alternative lifestyle in reference to homosexuality.
Sexual preference? I don't "prefer" guys. I prefer wearing sneakers than sandals. I prefer Final Fantasy than Halo. It makes it sound like my homosexuality is something I "like" but I can do heterosexuality given a situation.... Alternative Lifestyle? Homosexuality isn't a lifestyle. It's an element of life. It only determines who I'll fuck and fall in love with. That's it. It doesn't decide my career, my likes, my dislikes or my personality. Thus it isn't a "lifestyle". Sexual Orientation is the only PC term I accept. Anyone else Agree/disagree?

I was in a gay bar a few weeks ago and a small group of guys and myself sat at the bar and had this exact same discussion. We talked on this for an hour. The group broke it down as such:
As far as the phrase "sexual preference" goes: This just means what s3x (gender) does one prefer to be with. I argued that this phrase is a loose phrase. It can have a few meanings. "Alternative lifestyle" was concluded to be a straight phrase. Its a polite was of saying "gay". In society's eyes, its normal for a man and a woman to be together fall in love, blah, blah, blah. But when you're gay, you seek the alternative to that "normalcy". |

for each and everyone of us....gay....str8..etc :::I CALL IT LOVE::: simply that's all it is to me Words that other people chose to use to 'explain you'.... well... you'll drive yourself nuts if you get offended at them all... As long as you know who are that's all that matters. i'm not too keen on that Orientation word.... it always sounds like part of a question rather than an answer... Gay is just fine by me! Keep it simple, i say!

I agree with the observations posted so far. (And I can't help but notice that straight people aren't considered to have a "straight orientation," nor are they said to have a "straight preference.") But I view sexuality as a personal matter, and if it's really that big a deal for a person to know I'm gay ... then just tell them I'm gay.
