Do children need vitamin supplements?
The best way to assure your child gets a healthy diet full of vitamins and minerals is to emphasize variety. Offer foods each day from the different food groups and prepare meals with nutrients that complement each other.
Sounds great...but not all kids eat the way we would like. A picky eater might not get all the vitamins she needs. Many foods are deficient in minerals due to depleted soils. Processed and canned foods may not contain much nutritional value at all. Many kids don't eat a healthy diet all the time, and some kids rarely eat anything healthy. Imagine sitting in school all day when your brain and body is starving for good nutrition.
For these kids, a multivitamin isn't a cure-all, but it is a step in the right direction to ensure good health. What are some important components to a child's nutritional supplementation program?
What To Supplement
[SIZE=3]One common deficiency in children is the omega three type of essential fatty acid (EFA). EFA's are essential for proper nervous system and brain function, which is very important during those long school days. This oil can be found in pumpkin seeds, cold oily ocean fish like tuna, and in flax oil. It can also be taken as a supplement if kids don't like the strong taste of oily fish.
Kids who snub fruits and vegetables may not get enough vitamin C, which is important for our immune system and for the connective tissue under our skin. It protects us from damaging free radicals and is crucial for brain function. The B complex vitamins have several functions, some of which are involved with carbohydrate metabolism. A child that has a high refined sugar and starch diet may deplete those vitamins. As previously mentioned, minerals are often depleted in our soils, and therefore much of our produce may be deficient as well. Minerals like calcium and magnesium are important for healthy bones, nerves, and muscles. Zinc is important for our immune system. Chromium adds carbohydrate metabolism. Other minerals serve several other different functions.
Due to these possible deficiencies, I would suggest a multi mineral/vitamin taken daily as well as essential fatty acids. Some kids with health or behavioral problems may need more complex supplementation, which should be determined by a health care professional who is qualified in nutritional analysis.
is a biologically active food supplement designed specially for children aged over 4 years. It is recommended to compensate for the deficiency of vitamins, macro- and microelements. It increases child's resistance to infectious diseases, ensures normal development of the physical, mental and intellectual functions. It is recommended as a general strengthening means to improve body's resistance to infections and unfavorable environmental conditions. It may also be used to restore and maintain normal gastrointestinal functions, normalize the metabolism function, modulate and restore the Immune system.

·B-carotene it provides protection of cell membranes against ravages of free radicals.
·it regulates the growth of bones and participates in forming of optic pigments, necessary for normal twilight and colour vision.
·B-vitamins participate in regulating of reductive-oxidative processes and regulate the processes of cell fission and blood coagulation.
·Vitamin C increases the resistibility of organism towards infectious diseases and reduces the risk of oncogenesis.
·Vitamin E is an antioxidant, it inactivates formation of free radicals, and reduces the risk of oncogenesis.
·Vitamin D3 regulates calcium and phosphorus exchange in organism and normalizes the functions of haematogenic and immune system.
·Vitamin PP normalizes the functional state of skin, the nervous system and the digestive tract.
·Magnesium participates in many enzymatic reactions as a cofactor.
·Iron takes oxygen to tissues when being a component of haemoglobin.
· Zinc is participates in the processes of immune-competent cell fission and interaction.
·Phosphorus and calcium contribute to normalization of phosphorous-calcium exchange in the osteal system.
·Manganese has a stimulating influence on the processes of growth.
·Copper participates in reductive-oxidative processes.
·Selenium acts together with vitamin E as an antioxidant.
·Chromium regulates the assimilation of glucose by cells.

Many health food shops here are selling vitamins at knock down prices ever since a report came out that majority of these supplements etc, do very little for people. Their advice was that you obtain more nourishment and vitamins from fresh fruit and veg, fish etc.
Anyway if they did what they're supposed to do, none of us would have brittle nails, thinning hair, wind, spots, bad eyesight, and not least of all the excess weight we're always battling to get rid of.

Children? Depends.
It should be more "Does everyone need supplements?"
Basically, no.
But, that's only if they're not getting enough nutrients and such that a balanced diet gives them.
And, there's nothing wrong with vitamin supplements, if you're not getting enough of the vitamins...
Oh and- Pfffft @ breakfast.

Children who are Breastfed need a Vitamin D supplement, but older children shouldn't need Vitamins if they're provided with a healthy balanced meal daily.
Taking un-needed vitamins can actually do more harm than good.
