Default USB Port....

Alright. Im trying to install a webcam. I have Windows 2000. When I went to put the software in for the webcam it did this...

So...I went to Windows.com and found that I need to update the drivers. Here is the page I went to....http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system...FAQ_intro.mspx

I went to the device manager and all that stuff but... it didn't even show that I had USB ports. I have 4 of them. I see them clear as day.

Anyway I went down to step 4....Where it says if you don't have any drivers .....Blah, Blah....I went to Add New Hardware but..It did not give me any options to "Install the software automatically"...So..Yeah. I'm stuck.

Basically...I can't get my computer to figure out that it has USB ports....

By the way..In case you can't read it...On the little window in the picture...it says... " Setup is unable to locate a working USB port on this system. This product requires a working USB port to continue Installation. If you need help enabling USB support on your computer, please contact your computer manufacturer."

you need the driver CD that came with your motherboard.. or a copy of chipset drivers from it..

the main ones are Via 4in1, ALi, Sis.. check your motherboard/pc manual to find out which chipset you have..

Any other way to know besides checking the manual because I think I lost it.

I think it also depends if those USB ports came stock? or did you have them put in?

I run 2000 also and i installed my cam siply buy installing the cd that came with the came, and placing it in the correct usb port, just be sure that you are placing it in a usb port and not a printer port because they are often similar and it wont connect and register, i have that trouble, the port isn't a usb port but its for a printer like my lexmark.

Hope this helps.

Download and run belarc advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html)

That will tell you everything about everything inside your PC's box. Well, just about everything you need to know anyway

okay.. the easy way to find out.. is to look in your device manager.. in system devices.. many of the devices.. such as the PCI bridge will have a name..

VIA PCI Bridge.. Intel VGA-PCI etc...

once you know the manufacturer of your chipset (which controls your USB ports) I can tell you wehere to download drivers to get them working
