OK, I'm making this thread on Behalf of Fearless Virgin as she is having problems posting and is finding the forums really slow (Or something)

She just posted fine in the Suggestions forum, after this thread was made. o_O

edit: anyway, compressing them only allows them to be sent easier, etc.. it does not necessarily reduce file size. Also, you can save more compressed things onto flash drives even if it exceeds some memory.

I know...and it took me 20 minutes...cause I had to retype everything like 4 times

and it doesn't allow them to be sent easier...cause I did that yesterday...and it's slow as hell...

well...

not all filetypes will actually compress down significantly in size

you could use winrar from http://www.rarlabs.com

It's free..just nagware. Tells you to keep using the program you need to donate, but never actually stops working, so it's up to you if it's free or not

With winrar you can compress larger files into smaller, seperate segments, so you can send a large file in 2, 3, 4 or more parts. Use the "split into volumes/bytes" option

you can also choose the type of compression

The person receiving the files will also need winrar to uncompress them. And will need to put all the r01, r02 etc files in the same folder. Winrar will automatically umpress them all and join the file back together.

That way, if the email storage space is large enough, you could even email a complete DVD image. Would take forever to do, though

rakka...if i'm ever using winrar...i use the context menu...right-click and do everything that way...never get a nag as for compression...it really depends on what you're compressing...if you're compressing a movie...chances are that you won't be able to compress it using a compression tool...you'll likely have to compress it and convert it to another video format that allows for higher compression ratio...that kinda thing...i don't know **** about...rakka would though...if it's music...unless it's something other than an mp3 or ogg...you're unlikely to drop the size much more...unless you go with say the realplayer format...but that'll degrade the quality considerably...mp3 and ogg basically are a music compression format...each does about a 50 to 1 compression ratio...text is the easiest to compress...because it's just text...

compression is basically pattern reduction...compression tools work by replacing patterns in whatever you're compressing...for instance...if you have
Quote:
this is the the what you are the stuff and the you are what you had the way to stuff and who
you'll notice that there's a lot of the world "the", "what" "stuff" and a few others...replace those with a predefined single character...and the sentence shortens...vaguely that sort of context...but if it's already been compressed for the file format...for instance mp3 or the like...then you can't really compress it much more
