Life Partner/Spouse Benefits
I was looking through the newspaper today and came across an article in the jobs section. It basically said that the number of companies offering benefits to life partners or gay spouses is on the rise. Just to be clear, "benefits" means life insurance, medical coverage, hospitalization, prescribed medication coverage, vision coverage, dental coverage. One company that I found that actually does this is Macy's Department Stores.
So my questions are: Do you think that more companies should offer these benefits to homosexual employees and their life partners/spouses, and, in your area of the world, do you see a rise in the number of companies that offer these benefits? Post your thoughts.

And that's good. I think US companies need to open their eyes to the growing number of people who are involved in gay relationships. The number of gay marriages (where its allowed) and civil unions is on the rise. Those employees that are involved in said relationships should be afforded the same benefits as a straight employee.

i totally agree.
it's funny, tho, here in Canada the medical coverage of a long-term unmarried couple (common law), also included same-s.ex common law couples and that was years ago. Of course, companies that operate in Canada have no option but to operate under our laws, so there is no difference from company to company.
And our medical system is for the people of the country, offered as part of the Government of the country.
It's not a business, as it seems to be in the US.

Disney World was one of the first US companies to voluntarily provide such benefits, even before Civil Unions came into existence here. Personally, I'm all for it. But there doesn't seem to be much momentum behind it at the present.
I suspect the premature push to legalize Gay Marriage is part of the reason why. Now that many states have voted against legalizing same-s3x marriages, companies have used that as justification for not extending the aforementioned benefits. Of course, the real reason they don't offer those benefits is because it will cost them more money.

I think I heard of similar recognition here, in the UK, regarding same s e x relationships, but as for health, we already have free health careand have done since 1948, (and, no, I was NOT around at the time) but the easiest way to ensure ur partner benifits, is to make a will, tht way, where family's have disagreed with the partnership, ur partner is safe.
As for me, well, anyone is welcome to my debts when I'm gone which brings me to a more serious point, a partner may have to for pay any debts left after the loss of thier loved one, recognition does have its downside also.

No there really isn't any type of benefits for homosexual employees in australia well sydney for what i know of it's kind of rare. Even tho sydney is very open about the homosexual population that lives there benefits concerning them are offered and if are very rare.
