Question Portable HDD

Although this is not completely computer based, I thought I would try and get some ideas what is worng here. I have a CD player in my car that takes USB Flash Drives. So I thought, why not just run a portable HDD through it?

I formatted the HDD to FAT system, like it says to do for the Flash Drive in the CD player's manual, then ran the HDD on my power inverter.

Everything going well, I switched the CD player to USB mode, but nothing played. It recognised there was a USB device, but couldn't find the music on the drive.

Any idea's on what is the problem? Or even better, a solution?

did the manual say whether or not the cd player supported folders? how did you format the hdd? while it does support flash drives...does it say whether it makes a difference with an hdd? does it have a max amount of files it'll support? are they and do they have to be mp3s in a certain bitrate? while it might support id3 tags...does it have file name length restrictions?

it's sort of hard to troubleshoot something like that without either being there...or knowing what the cd player is and knowing the specifications...but those are questions i'd look at just thinking of things that might cause problems...

if your car stereo supports flash memory storage via USB, chances are it has it's own proprietary driver system.. I know my blaupunkt woodstck does..

you'll only be able to use a hard dive on it if it supports the standard mass storage driver system used by most USB external hard drive enclosures..

can you tell us what make and model of head unit you have and we might be able to give you further information..

I formatted the HDD to FAT system (not FAT16 or FAT32). It does support folders, the max is 99 I believe it said it could handle. I had 32 tracks.
The stereo is a Ministry Of Sound, model no. MOSCA089.
The hard drive I was trying it out on is a 2.1GB Seagate.
I have given up on this now, instead I burn MP3 CD's, it don't take up so much space as the hard drive with all the leads. Thought it might have been a good idea.

Plug your MP3 player into your car stereo! That's right. Compatible with Ministry of Sound MP3 players (MOSMP076/020).
the mp3 it's refering to is this one
http://shop.ministryofsound.com/Cultures/en-GB/Products/MOSMP076.htm?CatalogNavigationBreadCrumbs=Ministry ofSound|Audio|MP3_Players

so...kinda leads me to believe that it only works with their own mp3 players

I am afraid you are (kind of) mislead. It does accept flash drives, just don't accept Hard Drives. Any way, thanks for all the responses, I will just keep to MP3 CD's.
