Default Check Expiration Dates!!! It could save your life......

I received this in form of a forward from my mom..and thought about passing it on to you all :
This was sent to me and I am forwarding it on as an FYI to check your expiration dates!

I recently made a batch of pancakes for my healthy 14-year-old son,
using a mix that was in our pantry. He said that they tasted "funny,"
but ate them anyway. About 10 minutes later, he began having difficulty
breathing and his lips began turning purple. I gave him his allergy pill,
had him sit on the sofa and told him to relax. He was wheezing while inhaling
and exhaling. My husband, a volunteer firefighter and EMT, heated up some
water, and we had my son lean over the water so the steam could clear his
chest and sinuses. Soon, his breathing became more regular and his lips
returned to a more normal color. We checked the date on the box of pancake
mix and, to my dismay, found it was very outdated As a reference librarian
at an academic institution, I have the ability to search through many research
databases. I did just that, and found an article the next day that mentioned
a 19-year-old male DYING after eating pancakes made with outdated mix.
Apparently, the mold that forms in old pancake mix can be toxic! When we
told our friends about my son's close call, we were surprised at the number
of people who mentioned that they should check their own pancake mix since
they don't use it often, or they had purchased it some time ago. With so many
people shopping at warehouse-type stores and buying large sizes of pancake mix,
I hope your readers will take the time to check the expiration date on their
boxes. Also, beware of outdated cake, brownie and cookie mixes.
PASS IT ON!!!!

Thank you and kind regards,

Elizabeth Graham

Yeah.

And food poisoning rarely is as serious as described in that article; it sounds more like he had an allergic reaction than food poisoning anyway. Secondly botulism is really the only type of food poisoning that is seriously potentially lethal in people with normal immune systems and I'm pretty certain that botulinum doesn't grow in pancake mix. The article sounds more like a crappy scare chain mail than anything with real scientific accuracy.

Why would she "give him an allergy pill and tell him to sit on the sofa and relax" when he began having difficulty breathing and his lips were turning purple? Wouldn't it be wiser to call 911 immediately?

No one should use any product that's beyond it's expiry date, but also no one should play doctor. >.<

Annnd... Doesn't pancake mix grow maggots (or some kind of little white bugs) when it's old? Kinda like flour does when it's gone old.

Wow. That's different.
Like many, I check experation dates out of my own fright of food poisoning.
I'm one of those people that if milk is like one
day past it's experation date I'd go
"EWWW. No! It's old!"

Yeah, I'm a dork.

I've eating things weeks, months and even a year overdue. Thing is, you should always check to see if things are expired, and thanks for the precaution. But also if the food is within the date, check for signs of contamination. Some things can last though, for example, some medicines can last up to six months after it expires. God knows medicine is expensive.

Lol. I have to say the same thing as AshFire.
Who doesn't check the expiration date of a food?
I would always check mine.
Like a motto " Looks good but smells funny - then don't count on me tasting it "
