Ok the problem is...

There are 3 guys who decide to split the cost of a hotel room. The price is $300. The 3 guys decide to split the cost 3 ways...so $100 each. The manager realizes moments later that there is a special running that day and the cost of the hotel is actually $250 for the night. He quickly gives the Bellhop $50 and asks him to return it to the 3 guys. Sneaky as the bellhop is, he decides to pocket $20, and only gives $30 back to the 3 guys...so $10 each returned.

Now the guys originally paid $100, but got $10 back. So they each paid $90. Now 3 x $90 = $270. If you add the money the bellhop stole, its $270 + $20 = $290

So what happened to the difference of $10 (from the original $300 paid) Who has that money??

Anyone who can get the answer is a genius.

its a trick in words

that leads you to believe the answer is 300 and has you add the number 20 when you should be subtracting as follows:

3 x $90 = 270 then minus the $20 = $250 which is what they paid for the room.

And if you take what they ultimately paid for the room ($250) and add the $30 ($10 each they received), and then add the $20 the bellhop took, you would reach the original $300 that was paid.

Haha, this is weird but I'll hazard a guess.
My guess....

They didn't pay the $300 yet, so the price was $250 as the special thing

250 / 3 = $80, 10 dollars left.
There's 5 guys.
$10 / 5 = 2
So the 3 payers got $82 each, and the bellhop and manger both pocketed $2.
