The Saturday Aggust 8th PPV will show-case Hasim "The Rock" Rahman defend his WBC title against Oleg "The Big O" Maskaev, in what has been billed as AMERICA'S LAST LINE OF DEFENSE, an apt title considering Rahman is the only American holding a Heavyweight title; WBA champion Nicolay Valuev (Russia), IBF champion Waldimir Klitschko (Ukraine), Serguei Liakhovich (Ukraine).
Rahman faced Maskaev years before, when Rahman's original opponent, was injured and Maskaev was placed in as a late substitute, and surprised observers and critics by blasting the future 2x Heavyweight champion out of the ring! Of course, history has a funny way sometimes, since Maskaev after the win over Rahman faded into obscurity---while Rahman beat Lennox Lewis to become champion, only to lose it, and regained title status after Vitali Klitschko retired as the WBC champion, by beating Monte Barrett in a 12 round decision.
Rahman has made one defense so far of his title, a 12 round draw against James "Lights Out" Toney, a 9x world champion. Maskaev, on the other hand, since the original Rahman bout has gone 14-3 (12), 10 consecutive wins since his last loss back in 2002.
The PPV is $49.95 (suggested retail price), and be shown on 9:00pm EST (2:00am UK).
In other boxing news, former WBO Heavyweight champion and movie star, Tommy "The Duke" Morrison (aka Tommy Gunn, from ROCKY 5) has announced a come back. Morrison's last fight was back in 1997, after he was diagnosed as having HIV, which he states today was a scam and a hoax to keep him out of boxing. Morrison has yet to be licensed to fight in any state, but has reportedly contacted Mike Tyson to have a fight, though Tyson is retired himself.
Back in the 1990's Morrison had beaten George Foreman, and was about to have a mega-fight with Tyson, but negotiations fell through, though Morrison did later get to faced Lennox Lewis and did hurt Lewis, but only to get knocked out in the 6th round. Morrison hopes that he can finally get his chance at Tyson, and hopefully get back into title contention.
In other news, former Junior Welterweight and current WBA Welterweight champion Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton, who stunned critics by beating the invincible Kostya Tsyzu over 12 rounds, has announced that he will give up his Welteweight title belt after he will defend it against Oktay Urkal! Why? Because he was gunning to fight Arturo Gatti, but the ring-legend Gatti lost by KO to Carlos Baldmoir in 9 rounds. Hatton was hoping to unify the Welterweight title(s) to become the undisputed Welterweight champion. Britain's most popular boxing attraction, is now temporarily placed on the shelf.
More news will be updated, and I hope to give everyone the results of Rahman vs Maskaev!
