Maybe a woman since women give birth, and God supposedly gave birth to the world.

A man for some religions. A woman for other religions.

The Bible (Genesis 1:27) reads: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created he him; male and female he created he them.
(The "man," Adam, is repeatedly referred to as "them" prior to the appearance of Eve.)
This seems to suggest that God is both, which to me is consistent with female meaning "from" man. The original Adam was probably--dare I say--effeminite? Hermaphroditic? Regardless, the original "man" God created couldn't have been the same as the men we know today.
This is only what The Bible says of course; I can't comment about scriptures from other religions.

When it says God created man in His own image, not to be harsh, but I don't believe they meant physically. For, He created man, and obviously existed before man and woman. Therefore, since it announces their creation, they are new to this world. And God is not. He transcends physical existence and is purely spiritual yet has power over all that is physical. So He is neither male or female, since this is a physical trait that belongs to creation for the sake of reproduction.

Agreed with that..
If there is a supreme conscious being, It would seem to me highly unlikely that it is a person.
Rather that it's hard enough to grasp the concept of such a being, so the creator has been anthropomorphosised for the sake of illustration and simplifying the concept
