do people tell their parents or friends about them when they have one?

I think most just say they chat to someone online on a regular basis, rather than say they're having a net relationship.
Well I hope they would have the presence of mind to say that in real time.

I concur with your post. many people just say "i talk to him/her everyday" something like that rather than saying they are dating online. most people i have come in contact with and have had these sort of online relationships like to keep it to themselves rather than have the whole world know of it.
I commend those who have had successful relationships online and are able to make it work so successfully

So therefore wouldn't you agree that deep down they're somewhat embarassed to admit to having relationships on the net?
I mean imagine the conversation on a nite out with friends.
Friend 1 = My boyfriend and me are going on a romantic holiday next month.
Friend 2 = My girlfriend and me have set a wedding date, so can't afford a holiday as we're saving for the wedding.
Online Dater = Umm...well my boy/girl/friend will be searching Google so we can look at holiday destinations together in MSN. As for a wedding well all depends on Chatmaster's diary whether he can officiate at the ceremony.

online relationships r really hard to keep together and u have to face the truth.... r they who they say they r? wats sux about online bf/gfs r that u can't truly love them cuz most people can't truly love wat they haven't seen with their own 2 eyes, but its fun to go out with some1 all the same even if its over the net. well this is my opinion. don't pay heed to it if ya don't want to

Yeah. But not straight away. There was a few close friends that I told. But I didn't tell my family for a while. But everyone knows now. So it's all good!!

I wasn't planning to tell my mum at 1st, but as time went on, I decided I was going to.. And she was kinda, um.. how can I put it?? Surprised, at 1st.. She thought it was totally weird, but eventually got used to the idea, lol.
I also told my best friend, but as time progressed, I would have probally told more people, but I didn't get the chance.. =\

:O I told EVERYONE straight away.
Everyone knows everything about my online experiences.
:O My nine-year-old cousin is like 'YOU'RE GAY!?' 'Yes, and dating on the internet.' 'YOU CAN DATE ON THE INTERNET!?'
But when your parents hear you making love to your partner, it's pretty obvious you're going out..
Oh, and when you're kissing & hugging, and you say 'I love you baby' infront of them too.
