I dont really see how a grade 6 child could do that brain strainer because children don't grasp abstract thinking until they are at LEAST 12 years old and often older...they don't even begin to learn algebra til at least grade 7....so no wonder you're having a rough time with it.....

Algebra is 8th grade. Pre-Algebra is in 7th. (At least for me.)

yeah its weird...because I didnt even start algebra til grade 9...though I think they're trying to implement it earlier in the grades now ....

Algebra isn't abstract at all. In fact, Mathematics is probably the least "abstract" subject there is.

There's no reason why an educated 6th grader shouldn't be able to multiply $4 x 3, and then multiply that answer by 3 again.
