Being Positive about Being Gay
So often we say some say preach so much about about rights, gay and lesbian rights.
What do we do if anything to promote positive images of the gay / lesbian community, not very much. I think.
Gay people have given a great deal to their communities over the years.
Many have fought in wars and become heroes by their actions. Not many have said I have done this because I am a gay person, most just do the right thing, because It Is the right thing to do. That Is the right thing to do.
We as Gays suffer from a crisis of identity, do we all walk around hand on hip and lisp every other syllable to pander to the sterio type we are all cast as, no I hear you all say. So then why do we portray ourselves as such, not the majority, but a very significant minority do.
What I am saying here Is, many of us work hard at our jobs, we strive to achieve the highest goals possible, much like anyone else I guess.
We should say to our young LOOK! See what I have done.
My point Is this…
I want to see more gay and lesbian peeps stand up and say, despite the odds this Is what I have done with my life, this It what I have achieved.
I want to see more gay and lesbian Icons. ( they need not be famous )
I want to see more young gay men and women motivated by the success that very many gay men and lesbian women have achieved.
In short, for many of our community, we have to demonstrate that there is more to life than being a sad old drag queen on a float, that floats some one elses boat once a year! In some miserable parade, where a few sados dress up as a hasbeen Oz Icon and think they have conquered the world.
Drag Queens and similar cretins are under the illusion that they are achieving some thing, fact is there is never a very happy face beneath the paint of a clown.
I want to see positive images of being gay and peeps being proud to be so, and proud to be achievers.
Inspired by a conversation I had with a certain mod. I hope he approves.

No, we do not preach enough and that should change. Many people say that we are always wanting people to accept us and we always want to be noticed, but the fact of the matter is, is that we are people. We want to be accepted as a part of society and not as a gay man or woman. We are people aswell. Sure there are those feminine types that take it to the extreme, but can you blame them? They are who they are and want people to love and recognize them as a person and not by the sexual orientation. That is their business, not yours. So what if someone likes something that you don't. That is what makes the world so diverse. It is because people have different likes/dislikes, religions and opinions. We try (like you said) to promote positive looks at how we live and what kind of people we are and we would like to be accepted like everyone else. But sadly, people are not getting that concept of equality.

Many gays live their lives just like anyone else. Some have awsomely, terrific jobs and careers, others are fighting a war thousands of miles away right now. Just because a person is gay, does not mean that they cannot possibly understand how it feels to have a good career or accomplish greatness. I myself am a Head Chef. Now I suppose to many, they ask, "well how did he get that job. Isn't he gay?" I would that being gay had nothing to do with it. It was many, many years of hard work that lead me here.

Gays suffer from that everyday and will continue for a long time to come. Not every gay person acts gay nor do alot know that they are gay until they ask or that said gay person admits it. A minority like it to be known that they are gay and flaunt it to the world and I say fine, that is okay, but then people say well they should not act that way. Why can they now be themselves?

Exactly! We work just as hard as anyone else. Just because we like something different does not mean we cannot function like a normal human being.

Well Andy, as much as I would want that to happen aswell, many will find a way to put us down once again. Most gays are even afraid to come out because of hate, and or crimes against gays. We do need more icons, but we also need re-assurance that we will not be killed for liking who we are and wanting people to accept us for us.

That is what is funny. Most straight guys are scared to even hang out with gay guys because they think since we like men, we dress up like women, weaing their underwear and dresses and braws. We are men too! We dress just like you or atleast close to it. I do not need to pretend I am a girl. I am happy having a man chest and a man's body.

What's positive about being gay, seriously?
Where there's positives, there's negatives. And there's more negatives when it comes to gay people.
Nothing positive about being gay in my life, except Philly. Seriously. being gay is difficult.
