Default Hydrogen might replace gasoline

PITTSBURGH, May 10 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists are working to make hydrogen more stable and cost efficient than fossil fuels.

Carnegie Mellon University researcher David Sholl says increased concern about global warming and a need to conserve natural fuel sources prompted him to begin his search for lightweight, low-cost hydrogen-storage materials.

"We are currently studying the use of metal hydrides, such as alanates and borohydrides, to find materials that could ultimately improve the efficiency of hydrogen cars and curb pollution," said Sholl, a professor of chemical engineering.

Sholl's research team is seeking a material that will store larger amounts of hydrogen than can be held in a compressed gas tank, but will still be able to easily release the hydrogen to feed the fuel cell for cars of the future.

"Hydrogen can potentially be produced from domestic resources without emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is an attractive vision for a future fuel source," said Sholl, whose research is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and performed in collaboration with Professor Karl Johnson of the University of Pittsburgh.

Sholl and Johnson said their research might ultimately result in hydrogen replacing gasoline for vehicles of the future.

Takes too much energy to refine hyrogen in eco friendly ways.

Will never happen.

You might as well use the engery to power several electric cars rather than powering one hyrogen car.

The future can change. Look at cellular phones and 15 yrs ago. The people who died would have been shocked like OMFG!!! its cordless!! Give it another 5 yrs

Something like this will happen, it just might be too late
scientist have given themselves to 2040 to create an alternative source of energy, but with all the advanced research being crammed in, more than what has happened over the last 100 years, It may be too late, we might be in another dark age (just my opinion, none of it based on fact)

I guess.. It would have to be something totally new. We have reached our limitations with our present technology as far as extracting hyrogen.

lol, there might have been little boom's here and there over the last 100 years but by no means will we ever reach limitation. Always remember, when you want to get rich, start creating needs e.g. the mobile phone, new technology will arise from there....

You misunderstood me.

I know we have not reached our limitations in general.

But the only eco friendly way of seperating hydrogen is using solar engery right now.

It takes honda one week to seperate enough hydrogen to fuel a car.

While the same energy could power several electric cars.

We need to focus on the technology we have now.

Sure.. hyrdogen would be great.. but we're decades aweay from that.. even if it's possible...

We need to focus on.

New combustion engine design

Because the piston engine is hundreds of years old and obsolete.. we have reached our limitation with it.

There are a few new combustion engine designs .. that are way better than the piston engine. One will weigh 100 lbs and produce 300 hp.. I'll pull up the links later

2. improve flow in our piston engines

3. Rely on biofuels.. such as biodiesel.. ethanol.. and methane gas

4 Use hydro power

5. Use solar

6. use wind

7 use wood

8. Use of electric motors and genset cars.

9 Use ultra light materials like carbon fiber

Im glad your pointing this out, because most of it I agree with.....

I will point out what I dont agree with, which is only two points you mentioned

"We need to focus on the technology we have now"
No.... we need to focus on new technology for a new age, if the technology today was good enough to solve the problems that "scientist say" that face us, then no the technology we have right now isnt good enough, new creations are born everyday, humans are still unlocking secrets so in 5 years time, you might be calling yourself an idiot for thinking otherwise.... I underlined might because anything can happen.

As for new combustion engine design's, you will be a googolaire (100^100$, if there was such word existing lol) if you can create an engine that use's farts as fuel and reverse's the negative effects of the environment.

I first thought up a triangle combustion engine design a few years ago that included 6 cylinders and 3 crankshafts..... a bit complex the design was, but none otherless farfetched.... but I have found out, new farming tractor's have been using the design lol, someone bet me too it....
I wasn’t thinking of the emissions the engine would give off, but the reduction of energy needed for the same amount of power.
even the dumbest man with an ambition can come up with the most revolutionary design man has ever thought of...
