Hello everyone!
Today we are going to talk about proper chat room etiquette. Many of your might be visiting our free chat rooms for the very first time. The question you might ask yourself is: Are there any certain ways I need to behave or act in a chatroom?
What is proper chat room etiquette?
Here are some help tips we have come up with to make your experience pleasant and not pissing anybody else in the room off.
- First and foremost, please follow all the chat rules applicable to the room you are using. Not all the rules are the same and vary depending on which chat community you are a part of. Review them over a few times.
- Be respectful to other chatters. If someone is disrespectful to you, ignore them istead of arguing with them. Avoid the use of language or attitudes which may be offensive to others.
- When entering a new room, take a few minutes to get a feel for the climate of the room before jumping in. If you do not like the room, simply go somewhere else.
- Use proper judgment when selecting a nickname that you will use in the chat room. Avoid obscene or racial nicknames. They will surely offend someone else.
- Remember that you are not anonymous. Most chat rooms keep files of all interactions. When you log on the chat server it has a record of what your IP is. Remember that no chat is private. The chat server keeps files and can identify your IP. They can forward the files to your ISP who can pinpoint the exact address of where the PC he/she was using is located.
- Address the person by their nickname or username when chatting. People cannot make eye contact in these rooms so it can get confusing if you are not clear about who you are directing the message to.
- Use caps only for emphasis. Constant “shouting” can be annoying.
- Do not use your real name or reveal your address or any other personal information in a chat room. Some people might be offended by that and be fearful that their very own personal information might be revealed to the public. Keep that information confidential.
- Users in chat may insult or verbally abuse you. In fact, there are many instances where a user joins chat rooms just to annoy others. While your instinct may be to fire back, try to restrain yourself from doing so.
- Respect and welcome all newcomers to the chat. Remember, you were once a “newbie”. Being a “regular” isn’t easy to achieve and you will have earned it when you get there.
- Most importantly, enjoy your time in the chat rooms and never take things too seriously. Chat etiquette is something we all should use. This is not real life. There is so much more out there. We mostly use chat rooms for entertainment purposes and it should be treated as such.
